JohnB · John B – Electrostep (15th Anniversary Edition) [Remastered]

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE FROM 2006:

Electrostep, is varied, accessible, interesting, exciting & genre-bustingly electro-Robo-Tastic. John B’s 7th album is more than just a collection of disposable, short-lived dumb dancefloor D&B tracks. Lots of clever, funny lyrics, robot vocals, wide-ranging musical styles, pioneering approaches to production, mainstream appeal but its still underground, raw & refreshing. The influence of modern Electro, indie/rock & 80s synthpop is noticeable throughout, but is interpreted in a way that moulds perfectly with the power and energy of Drum & Bass to define a revolutionary new direction: soon to be widely known as ‘ElectroStep’!

Collaborators include: 80’s superstar Howard Jones on ‘For You See Me’ – a powerful blend of electropunk & DnB with a gorgeous vocal & breakdown/buildup. John Bs Porn star friend Marcy Meow provides vocals on the 80s covers ‘Tainted love’ and ‘Metro’. “We met in San Francisco – she’s done around 25 movies to date including Barely Legal and Bang Bros.” Marcy has her own band Suicide Tuesday and is currently working in Vegas. John performed with her this year at the WMC in miami at the soho lounge. Other collaborators include Floridian Bands Fashionista & Iowatest, Soma-signed My Robot Friend, new UK act One Life Left and LA Electro-TrannySex-Masters Dirty Sanchez.

PRESS:

KNOWLEDGE MAGAZINE: Electrostep is quite simply the most breathtakingly personal album by a drum & bass artist since New Forms. John B has single-handedly created a new genre in Electrostep, and it would be criminal if he didnt go on to achieve a similar level of acclaim as Roni Size did at the 1997 Mercury Music Awards.

IDJ MAGAZINE – ALBUM OF THE MONTH: If you think drum & bass has steered itself into an artistic cul-de-sac then you definitely need to hear this album, for it is unlike any other thrown up from this scene. For the past few years, with singles such as American Girls and Electrofreeek plus Marilyn Manson remixes, John B has almost single-handedly developed a drum & bass style soaked in eighties electro, rock, grunge and trance influences and doused in tongue-in-cheek humour; and it has garnered him a fan-base few of his contemporaries could test. Alongside original compositions such as Russian Bride and Stalking You On My Space, both demonstrating his acute take on life online, the album includes covers of 80s classics such as Tainted Love and Hey Mickey, remixes of Howard Jones and Dirty Sanchez, all presented in a dynamic dance floor mix. If you buy one drum & bass album this year, make it this, as youll be playing it in years to come 5/5

DJ MAGAZINE: John B is drum and basss eccentric anomaly! Not afraid to uniquely express himself… open minds should investigate!

D&B has never been particularly noted for either a sense of humour or being too off the wall, so thank fuck for John Bs Electrostep. Both tongue in cheek and irreverently innovative, Electrostep might sound like another newly imagined genre from the music journalist conveyer belt but its actually one of the most refreshing, entertaining and exciting LPs garnered by the d&b scene all year. Expanding the visions he first flowered with 04 LP In:Transit, the make-up loving eccentric covers semi-satirical electro d&b wig-outs, glistening trance nbass, body-popping robo-funkers and the bubble-gum grunge of recent single Stalking You On Myspace. And a jump-up d&b overhaul of Hey Mickey. If only all d&b albums were like this 4.5/5

TOUCH MAGAZINE: John B looks like an 80s pop star. All pho-hekan and eyeliner, hes used this synthesized decade as his muse for Electrostep. On it hes let a drum n bass robot and a disco robot do the bare backed beast together and now were invited to hear the Yamaha sparks fly. The 80s pop star Howard Jones collaborates on For You See Me (ah, now we know where blonde John got his image from) and porn star Marcy Meow adds to a cover of Tainted Love. And lest we forget the huge lead single Stalking You On MySpace, dedicated to the cool kids hobby de jour. But wheres his rendition of Dont You Want Me Baby huh? 4/5

A personal message from me, John B here! [Edit – I’ve come back to edit this post and use it as the ‘official’ info for the album – so I’ll post all the links for where/how to listen or buy the Limited Edition USB sticks here at the top, and you can continue reading below!]

Hi everyone! Just thought I’d post the first tracklists & copy of the Press Release for my big restrospective album project “Timelines” which is coming out at the end of the month. [Edit – it’s OUT NOW!!]

It feels wierd to be doing a ‘Greatest Hits’ album now as there’s a gazillion more tunes to come & I’ve just built a new studio for the next wave of work – but hey it’s been 25 years, and lots of this stuff isn’t available or very organised on Spotify & Apple Music so why not? In a way it will be nice to draw a line under all the older & unreleased stuff so I can focus clearly on all the new releases…

The album is in 3 parts – it’s been a beast to put together as there was so much stuff to go through & catalogue properly, and then remaster! There’s a ‘Best of’ (Part 1 – 30 tracks) and then “The Lost Tapes” (Part 2) which is 52 tracks, all remastered off the original DATS, most of which have never been available digitally, or EVER. The 3rd part is a big ‘Lost Tapes’ Soundcloud dump of even more stuff that never got released either, mainly from the early days – some if it pretty embarrasing, but think it’s nice to show where I came from and in some cases tracks where ideas were developed into better tracks later in my career. Part 1 & 2 will be available everywhere digitally as usual but Part 3 just on soundcloud, and I’ll make it available on Bandcamp too – just didn’t want potential new fans to hop on my spotify artist profile, find a load of my random old stuff and think that was where I’m at now lol!

Also a big thank you is owed to the DJs & Artists that have supported me & put so much time & effort in to help me over the years, especially in the early days. I’ll write more about this another time in the future & maybe in a podcast too but wanted to mention a couple while it’s on my mind:

Leroy Small aka DJ SS at Formation Records deserves a special mention for putting up with my probably superannoying nerdy overeagerness back then & put out almost all of my early stuff, including my first album ‘Visions’ & introduced me to all the important people in the scene right from the start – took me on tour to the USA for the first time with the World of Drum & Bass, and always put me on where he could at DJ gigs up in Leicester & label nights around the world. When you listen to the ‘Lost Tapes’ and the Soundcloud dump stuff you start to understand what a big part quality A&R like that goes in to sorting out what came out and what didn’t – which is very important when trying to build a name for yourself as an artist. Big up. Also to Tania at UMC my first DJ bookings agent who looked after me for many many years back then & sent me all over the world!

Also big up to Grooverider as always for the general epic inspiration & huge support that putting ‘Secrets’ out meant – and being cool with including it on this album! Same goes for Fabio for the support & inspiration as a DJ & label boss at Creative Source – and also putting up with me probably babbling on over-enthusiastically when the lights came on at Swerve every week back in the day lol. Most of the music I made back when I was starting out, and still now was done aimed with their sets in mind. Respect.

Big thanks & huge respect also to Goldie at Metalheadz for the support, inspiration & overseeing guiding force on D&B. Such a huge honour to have signed anything to Headz, and thanks for letting me include ‘Up All Night’ on this release, think my ‘Best of’ album would have a huge hole in it otherwise! Big up Ant TC1 for all the help on that too. Also big love to DJ Storm for the always honest feedback & support too, again from the early days up to today – her help in opening doors at Headz to get ‘Diversify’ on Platinum Breaks and linking with Up All Night was huge for me. Bailey too absolutely. Thank you all!

Finally another mention behind the scenes has to go to Adrian Lloyd & Kelly Humphreys (aka SDR & Subsonic) at Shoe Box Records who also put up with a lot from me in the very early days too & put out some of my very first stuff. Adrian worked at the local record shop ‘Hard Edge’ in Maidenhead at the time & put up with me coming in almost every day on the way from home and playing him (casette) demos of whatever wierd stuff I’d been working on, but then helped school me on what decent D&B was about at the time, and then went on to be a great help when I started DJing, and was away at Uni, playing promos down the phone & posting records up to Durham to me every week! There’s quite a few of my releases from Shoe Box on the ‘Lost Tapes’ here, as they were only ever released on Vinyl, so it’s been great to remaster those & hear them properly again – some of my best work from that time IMO.

Loads more people to mention but I’d be here all day! Only meant to really post a quick press release about the project here… My MUM & DAD certainly deserve a shout too but think I’ll save that for another time – actually planning to get my dad in on a podcast to interview him on camera about our times when I managed to get him out to DNB nights, and even a few raves back in the day 🙂

JOHN B –TIMELINES (1995-2020) [RELEASE DATE: FEB 28 2020]

PART I: TIMELINES (1995-2020): The Best Of
PART II: TIMELINES (1995-2005): The Lost Tapes
PART III: The Lost Tapes Soundcloud Dump

“John B opens the vaults on a remarkable career in a typically over-the-top style… A truly unique retrospective.” MIXMAG – Album of the Month Feb 2020. Described by Mixmag as “in a league of his own,” it’s undeniable that John B knows how to stand out from the crowd. With an eighties-influenced aesthetic of shocked silver hair, bright makeup and eyeliner and an attitude packed with the sheer exuberance of modern club culture, John B is a world apart from your overly edgy, run-of-the-mill, black t-shirt types.

This identity filters through into his music and you’ll know a John B tune when you hear one: playful but serious, full of energy yet still more sophisticated than most. His ability to balance a wide array of sounds, styles and influences is perhaps his defining ability as a musician – an ability that’s encapsulated on his forthcoming “TIMELINES” anthology album project.

‘Red Sky’‘Starburst’ and the banging 2019 remake of ‘Pressure’ are just a few of the many tracks that have been remastered & revitalised for TIMELINES, a two-part, retrospection on John B’s greatest hits (along with a huge Soundcloud dump of an extra 75 previously unreleased tracks & demos). It’s a milestone for John, a celebration of a decades-spanning career that’s seen his name spread across charts and billboards around the world from San Francisco to Siberia.

As well as some of his best-known music, John is also reaching deep into the vaults to remaster and release a cache of his own never-before-heard gems from 1995 to the mid 2000s – undeniably one of the greatest periods in the genre’s history. With these two sections, Timelines covers almost twenty years of John’s creative history and it does so with all the style and wit that we’ve come to expect. Fun party tracks like ‘Blandwagon Poos’ & ‘Ay Caramba!’ sit comfortably alongside the deadly serious ‘Secrets’ & ’LAVA’, and the ambitious trance & bass/synthwave hybrids ‘Robot Lover’ & ‘Approaching Zero’.

Alongside this release John will be touring some exclusive extended Timelines ‘History’ sets, digging deep into the Headz Blue Note-era archives and reaching for some serious classics. Timelines themed editions of the John B Podcast, rescued live mixes from the archives, original tour vlogs from the early 2000s, and maybe even a live stream from the newly finished John B DIY-mission Loft set-up (if you’ve been watching John’s Instagram stories you’ll know what we mean) are all coming as part of the project.

It’s part of a retrospective tip currently characterising John and Beta Recordings but also the scene more broadly, demonstrated well by his contribution to Spearhead’s celebration of their 100th release, as well as the upcoming remixes of ‘Up All Night’ as part of the 25 Years of Metalheadz celebrations. With several other releases in the works, including a remix for coldwave legends ‘the KVB’, a 2 track collaboration with Digital on long-time haunt Metalheadz, new singles on Beta, newly built studio and an exciting new Festival AV project John B’s music schedule is almost as packed as his DJ calendar.

Having recently hit Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, the USA & Canada, with Liquicity & Outlook on the horizon this year John B is bringing his focused yet eclectic musical selections to an ever-increasing global D&B audience.

Originally a USA-only Mix CD in peak-Electroclash-era 2001, John B has remastered Brainstorm (in his newly built studio), and added 4 previously unreleased tracks from that time including the rare “Synthpop Electro Mix” of ‘Up All Night’ to the package. Previously unavailable anywhere digitally, and now with the individual DJ-Friendly tracks alongside the mixed versions, this is a great album for D&B collectors and fans of John’s early explorations into what would become his ‘Electrostep’ Sound.

Original Press Release from 2001:

A ground-breaking 70 minute John B DJ mix of Futuristic Electro & Trance-Influenced Drum & Bass Killers, Drawing on influences from 1980s Electro & Synthpop, Progressive Trance, Breakbeat and Drum & Bass John B has identified a completely new direction for Drum & Bass. Robotic New Wave Synthesizer Action with destructive D&B Basslines. Vocoded Retro Lyrics, infectious Drum Machine techno-funk and beautiful euphoric vocals lead D&B through a new phase of Evolution in a seamless mix that sounds just as good at home as on the dancefloor.

“Hello again, it’s good to see you…”

Beta Recordings Space-Captain, Retro-Synth-80s connoisseur and flagrant rule shredder John B touches down in his drop-ship from a stacked touring schedule with a genuinely singular piece of work: ‘Approaching Zero’.

Over a year in the making, conducting and fusing the creative compositional skills of Russian multi-instrumentalist (& professional drone cameraman) Tairum and longstanding vocal cohort Xenturion Prime (FKA Code64), ‘Approaching Zero’ is the culmination of all John’s signature muses: Stark futurism, 23rd century romanticism, time travel paradoxes, lavish 80s aesthetics and dancefloor theatrics, all wrapped up tightly in a neon glowing contemporary D&B production pressure cooker.

It’s a quintessential example of the Synthwave/Epic-Retro-80s influenced Drum & Bass John has been honing and pioneering for over the last 15 years.

Galvanised by Bjorn from Xenturion Prime’s vocals alluding to meeting your past self in the future, approaching end of life (and mildly chiding the loudness war stormtroopers with its 0RMS double entendre) ‘Approaching Zero’ shines an entirely different light on typical songwrit- ing trends in Drum & Bass and expresses John’s love for all things 80s to the very detail.

From his own VHS-era 80s Sci-Fi cyber art video to the unique unplugged version that strips the song back to its chords and acoustic guitar, this is the future ‘synthwave’ inspired D&B sound of John B that the past John B has been focused on since he championed his own distinctive ‘Trance and Bass’ direction with his infamous (now highly collectable) ‘Trance & Bass’ Mixmag cover CD many moons ago.

Will this be his legacy? See you at the edge of the universe….

Destination future: John B ignites another big year with ‘Omega Racer’. A surging return to his epic synthwave/D&B Hybrid sound with pure positivity and energy, whether you’re looking to uplift your dancefloor or hunting replicants, this is the perfect soundtrack.

The latest in an exciting new line of talent to feature on Beta this year including Hectix, Specialist Sound and Melotronics, ‘Omega Racer’ is the result of a rough demo sent to Beta HQ by young Austrian artist Wreckage Machine. Instantly hearing promise in the demo, John jumped on board and navigated the track towards the most euphoric pastures possible with a knowing sense of futuristic timelessness: A crystalline blast of pure synthesis powered with precision levels of barbed elation, this builds on the trance and bass sound John’s been sculpting for most of his career.

The sound of an open road into an unknown future – landing amid b2b US tours, forthcoming collaborations with Digital and Code 64, an appearance on Hospital’s ‘Sick Music’ album and an in-demand festival season on the horizon – ‘Omega Racer’ marks the start of another busy year for the long-standing innovator and his imprint. Buckle up.

Beta Recordings’ 50th release and the beginning of a new chapter for Label owner John B.

Evolve is an exciting new project, musically & conceptually, from John B. A consistent series of new releases, reliably out every month, a new musical direction, the rebranding of the John B Podcast to ‘Evolve Radio’, and a futuristic touring concept & a compilation mix series to come.

Moving away from the traditional cycle of artist albums – long periods of quiet, then sudden push to promote one album, followed by silence again, this will mean a faster cycle from track completion to release, and steadier stream of adventurous, new music, continuously and regularly released – the vibe, awareness & promotion will develop organically as the project progresses.

Fusing the influence of mature, uplifting, progressive electronic music with the power, energy & surgical production values of Neurofunk & big-room Epic Drum & Bass, but still looking back and referencing his roots, John B’s sound is Evolving once more. Think Pryda vs Noisia, Jean Michelle Jarre vs DLR, Vangelis vs Hybris. Huge evolving arpeggios & uplifting yet restrained soundscapes contrasting with the tight drums & unstoppable force of modern electronic Drum & Bass. This is the mission statement.

The first track in this continuing series itself is entitled ‘Evolve’ and features speech & vocals contributed by fans from all over the world. A long, unfolding epic, morphing intro slowly builds into a tight, simple drop cutting straight through to the dancefloor, twists & develops further into a second drop where mangled reece basslines emerge from the depths and take things to the next level. A perfect release to set the bar high & begin an exciting new journey…
